Notre Dame – Is Four Quarterbacks Enough?

In an exceptionally well written post on recruiting, SAS put forth the premise that four quarterbacks is enough since the top quarterback recruits for 2012 have eluded Brian Kelly and the Irish this year.  Read all about it Here

Dayne Crist – 2 years left
Tommy Rees – 3 years left

Andrew Hendrix – 4 years left

Everett Golson – 4 years left (and possible redshirt)

It appears Notre Dame can skip a year in recruiting a quarterback and push hard for one in 2013.  Who wants five quarterbacks when you only have 85 scholarships?  Who wants to ride the pines and where a dumb red shirt?

Then we just read the demise of JoePa and Penn St.  Read it Here.

Redshirt freshman Paul Jones is academically ineligible

Junior Kevin Newsome is leaving the program and Penn St.

That leaves historical and perennial PSU Head Coach JoePa with two quarterbacks.

Junior Matt McGloin

Sophomore Rob Bolden

Bolden sought his release from scholarship in January but was denied.  We have never heard of a student athletic being denied release.  That almost sounds like slavery.  Why keep a guy who is seeking a new opportunity at another venue?  He has since changed his mind.

So should Notre Dame have five quarterbacks on the books?  Charlie Weis tried four and it blew up in his face.  We suspect Brian Kelly will use at least three this year in his Game Plans to confuse the defense.  Don't expect any changes.
